·         DESEF Auction is Here! The Disney  Education Foundation’s online auction is NOW OPEN and runs through February 9. Additionally, the live auction / dinner / casino night gala is scheduled for Saturday, February 27. Tickets are still for sale to this fabulous event. You can purchase tickets to the live auction event online at the auction site.

I am truly looking forward to my first auction event here at Disney. I want to especially thank DESEF and especially Michelle Cordoba for her leadership in organizing this fundraising effort. The prizes that will be auctioned off are incredible. With the continued cuts that we anticipate coming from the recently released Governor’s budget, we know that our operating budget for the 2010-2011 school year will be a challenge, to say the least. With funds from the state decreasing, the local fundraising efforts of schools become increasingly important to ensure that our children have the high quality education that they deserve. The funds raised from events like the upcoming auctions will fund critical programs here at Disney Elementary such as our library, technology, art program, and classroom / intervention aides.

·         SRVEF 1st Annual Read-a-thon: The San Ramon Education Foundation is holding their first every read-a-thon to raise funds and, at the same time, promote the critical skill of reading. At Disney, we will promote and encourage students to participate in the read-a-thon, however, we will promote the read-a-thon part without the fundraising aspect for this year. We strongly support SRVEF, however, we have our DESEF auction event currently running and our WDPTA spell-a-thon event coming in the near future. I feel strongly that we cannot go to our community one more time for additional fundraising. If you and your child would like to obtain pledges and participate in the fundraising portion, you can visit the SRVEF Read-a-thon website. There are prizes and incentives for students who participate in just the reading aspect as well. Our wonderful librarian, Dianna Rom, will give students information about the read-a-thon during their library time.

·         Parking in Front of Kids Country: We have observed an increasing number of cars illegally parked in front of Kids Country both before school and at the 9:30 drop off time for our late readers. When cars are parked in the loading zone curb, other cars cannot safely drop off children at the curb. Some cars are resorting to dropping off their children in the middle of the lane. Please find parking in our parking lot or on Pine Valley Road and walk your child into Kids Country to create a safer parking lot for our children and community.

·         Let’s Cut Down Our Tardies! Please make a concerted effort to get your children to school on time in the morning. Our staff begin supervising the grounds starting at 8:25 am. A “warning bell” rings at 8:35 am with the tardy bell ringing at 8:40 am. This week, our attendance desk has prepared over 70 letters to families to warn them that their child(ren) have 3 or more tardies since the start of the school year. Being late to school leads to the following challenges for your child:

·         Your child misses important classroom announcements

·         Missing valuable instruction

·         Increased stress felt by children

·         A possible belief that school or promptness is not important

·         Missing out on play time and social opportunities that he/she could have on the playground before school

·         Attention all artists: The 6th Annual Street Smarts Storybook Poster Contest presented by Sunset Development Company is here!  Elementary school children from throughout the San Ramon Valley are encouraged to draw illustrations for Street Smarts’ third traffic safety storybook, “The Giant’s Party” by local author Dana Mentink.  In the story, Jack climbs the beanstalk up to the giant’s castle and receives instructions to deliver party invitations to other storybook characters.  Jack learns about bicycle, scooter, skateboard, and rollerblade safety along the way.

The winning illustrations will be featured in the final ten-page storybook and will be distributed to thousands of children in the San Ramon Valley at libraries and community centers.  The ten winners will get their own treasure: a Flip Video Camcorder and art kit.  The winning artwork and final storybook will be unveiled at the Storybook Poster Contest Awards Ceremony on March 11, 2010 at the Dougherty Valley Performing Arts Center.

Students in grades K-5 of all artistic abilities are encouraged to participate.  The contest ends February 8, 2010.  Entry forms and contest information can be picked up at the main office or by visiting www.streetsmarts-srv.com.
