·         8th Annual Community Fair : Every summer, parents/guardians wonder what they are going to do to keep their child(ren) busy. Well, wonder no more. Everything ranging from music and sports camps, to Bollywood dance lessons and cultural exchange programs, to kids crafts and academic tutoring, to child care services and State park adventures, can be found at the 8th Annual San Ramon Valley Community Fair on March 31, 2010, which will be held at Iron Horse Middle School from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. The Community Fair provides a "one-stop-shop" for families to meet face-to-face with various groups that provide summer and fall programs and activities. This year the Community Fair will feature activities/programs for both general and special education children...as well as volunteer opportunities for families and youth. This event is FREE to the public...and is appropriate for families with pre-schoolers thru high school graduates. Hope to see you there!

·         “Pass it On” Book Donation: Do you have books that you no longer want?  The PTA Cross County, with the help of our Student Council, is collecting gently used Kindergarten through 5th grade books for our sister school in Antioch.   Please take a moment to clean up your bookshelves and donate some books to a child in need.   Collection boxes will be in each classroom and the school office through April 2.   If you would like more information please contact Joan Knight or Christine Salisbury.

·         Class Placements for 2010-11:  The teachers and I will work together soon to create balanced classes for next year. If you have questions regarding how we create class assignments, download and read the FAQ sheet. If you would like to submit a Student Information Sheet based on your child’s learning needs, download and submit the Student Information Sheet to the front office by May 15. You can also pick up a Student Information Sheet in the front office.

·         Free & Reduced Lunch:  we have all felt the crunch of our recent economy in one way or another. Our school district does offer school lunch service on a free and/or reduced fee basis for families who qualify. I invite families to consider this option as a nutritious lunch makes a big difference in our children’s day. Visit this website below to download the application, and return it to the Disney office. All applications and information are kept confidential.

·         Summer Enrichment Program :  as many of our families may have already heard during conferences with teachers, our district will not have an intervention summer program for elementary students (except for some cases of special education and English learners). However, enrichment summer school will continue. To see what classes are available, go to the K-4 district summer programs website where you can also sign up your child(ren). Online registration opens on March 24.

·         Please Follow Traffic & Parking Laws :  Thank you for all of our parent drivers who are following all traffic and parking laws. Please be respectful to other drivers and our neighbors by not parking in front of driveways on Pine Valley Road and Pebble Place, not parking in loading zones, and watching out for pedestrians crossing at marked crosswalks. Our childrenssafety are our utmost priority.

·         THANK YOU Disney Community!:  The live auction event held last weekend, was incredibly successful. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and I hope all attendees had a great time. The best part of the night was the proceeds that were raised to fund programs and equipment that will continue to make Disney a “great place to learn and grow” for our students. With the much public news of drastic budget cuts across our state and school district, local fundraisers like this one are critical. The initial count is in, and the online auction, silent auction, and live auction events raised a net profit of $83,489. I’d like to thank all staff members, parents, and our Disney Elementary School Education Foundation for supporting this event. A special “thank you” goes out to our committee chairs – Sarah Frank, Valerie Singh, and Michele Cordoba who led a long list of parent volunteers for their creativity and hard work.

·         Technology Update:  With the infusion of new “21st century tools” on our campus, we are starting to see teachers and students participating in new learning activities that were not possible without these tools.  Here is a brief overview of what your children did this week in our computer lab. Personally, the exciting aspect is we are starting to see Disney students not only be “users” of digital content, but they are now starting to be “authors, creators, and producers” of digital content.

Kinder: Students completed their Sesame Street sorting game.
1st and 2nd: Students finished math logic games.
3rd and 4th: Students started on their grade level Synonym games.
Tayeb: Students used MS Word for their weekly spelling test.
Hughes: Students worked on 5th grade Synonym game.
Macias: Students worked on researching materials for their script for the upcoming class podcast. Students were introduced to the basics of creating a podcast.
