·         DESEF Auction is Here! Thank you for all those who participated in our online auction. It was a huge success, the second phase of our auction event is coming. The live auction / dinner / casino night gala is scheduled for Saturday, February 27. Tickets are still for sale to this fabulous event. I am truly looking forward to my first auction event here at Disney. I want to especially thank DESEF and especially Michelle Cordoba for her leadership in organizing this fundraising effort. The prizes that will be auctioned off are incredible. With the continued cuts that we anticipate coming from the recently released Governor’s budget, we know that our operating budget for the 2010-2011 school year will be a challenge, to say the least. With funds from the state decreasing, the local fundraising efforts of schools become increasingly important to ensure that our children have the high quality education that they deserve.

·         New SRVUSD Cyber-bullying Policy:  With the increased level of technology available to our children, comes increased responsibility for the appropriate use of technology. The internet and technology brings an incredible resource into the hands of our teachers and students, however, there is the chance that a small few will use these tools inappropriately. As a result, SRVUSD has released a new policy on cyber-bullying. This policy will be a part of all future printings of our student handbooks and parent handbooks, but the policy will be in effect immediately.

·         “Relief for Haiti  Drive :  The Disney student council is sponsoring a coin drive to collect money for the people in Haiti. All funds will be donated to the Red Cross. This has been a wonderful opportunity for teachers, students, and even parents to model what it means to look beyond our own needs and have a global vision towards the needs of those in Haiti.  The last day to contribute is this Monday, February 22. Containers are in every classroom.

·         ELAC Meeting on March 2 :  Due to our growing population of English Learners (students for who English is a second language), we are starting an English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) comprised of teachers and parents. If your child is an English Learner (EL), you should have received an invitation to our meeting on Tuesday, March 2, at 3:30 pm in the Disney Library. At this meeting, you will learn what it means for your child to be an English Learner, how to work together with your child’s teacher, and you will have a chance to give valuable feedback to me and our teacher members on how we can best serve our EL students.

Our school district does offer school lunch service on a free and/or reduced fee basis for families who qualify. I invite families to consider this option as a nutritious lunch makes a big difference in our children’s day. Visit this website below to download the application, and return it to the Disney office. ·         Meeting this Thursday: come to this month's PTA meeting this Thursday, February 11, in the library. Our general meeting starts at 7:00 pm. This is a great opportunity to hear about the latest school happenings and events. Also, I’d like to send out a big “thank you” to our PTA for another fun family fun night this past Friday. We had another Bingo night that was very well attended. Children and family enjoyed playing bingo, previewing the classroom auction baskets that are on sale at the auction, and enjoying treats baked by members of one of our Disney girl scout troops. If you have not attended a PTA family fun night, there will be others coming soon!

·         Spirit Day this Friday: our student council is sponsoring another school "spirit day" this Friday, February 12. This Friday is "Crazy Hair Day." All students and staff are invited to come to school with their favorite crazy hair-do.

·         Chevron Matching Grants: thanks to Chevron and Donors Choose, our teachers can post their proposed projects in Math, Science, Technology, and Engineering for individuals and companies to give funds to pay for associated equipment. For every dollar you or your employer donates to a project, Chevron will match your donation until the teacher can fund the project. Disney's 3rd grade team has posted their Flipping Over Math project. Check it out.

·         Time with Technology: thanks to both our PTA and DESEF for funds that have contributed greatly to our movement towards providing Disney students with “21st century tools.” In addition to our new presentation systems (document camera, upgraded computers, and LCD projectors) in all K-5 classrooms, our new iMac lab is driving an updated learning experience for our students. If you’d like to view the technology standards that students are learning both in the lab and within classrooms, visit the Disney Computer Lab website. You can also visit the Disney Lab wiki to view links of specific online sites and resources that Disney students use. Children can also visit most of these sites from home.

In order to give you a “snapshot” of some of the work being accomplished in our iMac lab, here are this week’s highlights of what students have been doing in the lab with Ms. Manghirmalani:

K: Students worked on their counting skills.

1st : Students worked on basic addition and subtraction skills.

2nd: Students worked on and completed the time telling skills.

3rd: Students worked on multiplication and division skills.

4th & 5th: Students researched  about and took notes on Vancouver 2010 Olympics report.
